Sustainable Tips for This Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with friends, family, and fireworks, but it doesn’t have to come at the cost of the planet. Here are a few easy ways to keep your celebration safe, festive, and environmentally friendly:
1. Safe Sparklers
Traditional fireworks may be a staple of the holiday, but they also release harmful chemicals and debris into the environment. They contain heavy metals, toxic chemicals, and microplastics that pollute our air, water, and soil. When these pollutants make their way into our oceans, they pose a severe threat to marine life.
Additionally, fireworks remain strictly prohibited in some areas, i.e., within all Oregon State Parks, along the entire Oregon coast, and in the City of Portland. So if you care for the environment, like we do at SOLVE, respect local rules, think twice before buying fireworks, even if you are in an area without official restrictions.
Instead of setting off your own fireworks, which cause increased air pollution, attend a community show. And if you want to go the extra mile, join our Afterglow Cleanups on July 5 and 6 to help restore the places we all care about.
Sustainability also means safety!

When clearing beaches, riverbanks, parks, and neighborhoods:
Let used fireworks cool completely before handling. Soak them in a bucket of water for at least 15 minutes before disposing of them.
Do not put used fireworks in recycling bins. Once soaked, place them in a plastic bag and dispose of them in your regular trash.
Never try to relight “duds.” Wait 20 minutes, then soak and safely dispose.
Check local guidelines for firework use and disposal to ensure you’re following community safety protocols.
2. Green Grilling
While there’s no way to grill without pollution, electric and propane grills are cleaner than charcoal, creating less air pollution. Better yet, go plant-based for your cookout—grilled veggies, plant-based burgers, and fresh fruit skewers are crowd-pleasers and kinder to the environment.

3. DIY Decorations
Don’t buy new decorations, get crafty. Use what you have! White Christmas lights, upcycled denim, and colorful fruit can all make perfect decor. Not only will you reduce waste, but you’ll also add a unique personal touch to your party.

4. Ditch Disposable Silverware
Single-use plastic creates so much waste. Be sure to use biodegradable or compostable cutlery. Or just use the reusable dishes you already have at home. If you're hosting, set up a bin for recyclables and clearly label it to make cleanup easier and more eco-friendly.
