Springwater Rails Cleanup

In an annual tradition that has provided generations of Portlanders and their out-of-town guests with lasting memories, the Oregon Pacific Railroad hosts holiday-themed train rides that are filled with families creating holiday memories. These trains run through the month of December parallel to the Springwater Trail between the east end of the Tillamook Bridge and Oaks Amusement Park.

This year, there are two large piles of garbage cascading down the scenic cliff that will be included in those memories if we don’t do something about them.

The first site is a mile north of Oaks Amusement Park on the Springwater Trail under the Oaks Bottom day-use parking on Milwaukie Ave. The second site is under the south end of the former Ross Island Sand and Gravel building just down the cliff from the Hwy 99 / SE Holgate intersection.

Please join @PDXRemoveByBike (Instagram), SOLVE and Oaks Amusement Park while we bag and move the debris a short distance to waiting cargo bikes, bike trailers, or any other Springwater-friendly contraption you want to load up. Oaks Amusement Park has graciously allowed us the use of their parking lot to then the load bags into waiting vehicle trailers for disposal at the landfill.

We have obtained permission from Oregon Pacific Railroad to work inside their fence. To ensure everybody’s safety. the railroad will have the tracks ‘locked out,’ to preclude all rail traffic the day of the event.

There are two primary roles we’ll need volunteers for: 1) Pickers are needed to collect and put debris into new bags, and, 2) Haulers can be anyone with a way to transport large bags of garbage the mile (site 1) or 1.4 miles (site 2) to Oaks Amusement Park.
