Urgent Needs Cleanup Event at Rocky Butte / Grotto

On July 29th, SOLVE is hosting a trash cleanup event at Rocky Butte Park, home of perhaps the most accessible outdoor rock climbing area in Portland. It’s eccentric and gritty, located in a fairly wild state park at the center of a major metropolitan area. These urban climbing walls have gotten a bit of a reputation for its broken glass and other debris.

We’re asking the local community to join us in removing some of the trash left behind and creating a more welcoming environment for us all to enjoy.

We will be filling bags with trash and moving them to a dumpster at the end of the trail.

SOLVE defines an Urgent Need cleanup as an area with a high concentration of litter that poses a threat to public safety and environmental quality. Urgent Need cleanups are not family friendly or suitable for anyone under the age of 18 due to an increased presence of hazardous materials. We will be picking up trash that are adjacent to active encampments. Safety guidelines will be put in place before the cleanup begins. Please come wearing sturdy work boots if you have them.

Time: Thursday July 29th,10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Meeting Location: Outside the trail head at NE 92 and NE Skidmore. MAP LINK

Pre Registration is Required: We will only be opening the event to a limited number of volunteers. If you would like to participate please sign up (Green Sign Up Button Below) quickly before spots run out.

What's Provided: SOLVE will provide trash grabbers, trash bags, work gloves, and high-vis vests.

What to Bring: Masks are now optional if you are fully vaccinated but please bring one if it makes you feel more comfortable. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy work boots if you have them, and long pants. Wear a hat and put on sunscreen if it is a sunny day. Also bring your cell phone, and a filled reusable water bottle. If you bring personal belongings please bring a backpack so you can pick up trash hands-free.

Restrooms: Public restrooms will be available during this event at the Grotto chapel.

Parking: There is free street parking available around NE 92nd and Skidmore. Also the Grotto is allowing volunteers to park in parking lot #5 down the road on Skidmore.

Accessibility: Unfortunately, this event is not ADA accessible. The trail where we will be working has a minimal incline and is mostly flat with some uneven terrain. For those willing and able, there is a steeper trail (optional) where we could collect more trash from, as well as the thicker forested areas surrounding the trail.

We request that volunteers for this event are 18 years or older.

Contact: For questions, please contact Peter Brewer at peter@solveoregon.org.
