King Neighborhood Cleanup to honor John Lewis' Birthday
Let's come together to celebrate the birthday and honor the incredible life of long-time US Congressman & activist John Lewis by showing Portland a little love and picking up a little trash. John Lewis was a civil rights pioneer. He organized sit-ins at segregated diners in Nashville, was one of the original Freedom Riders, organized voter registration campaigns and marches in Selma, and served as a United States Congressman from 1987 until his death in July 2020.
But his legacy lives on. "Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."
