3rd Annual Earth Day Weekend Cleanup & Camp-out
Friends of Fall Creek Watershed Inc Presents: OUR THIRD ANNUAL EARTH DAY CLEAN-UP CAMP-OUT!
Saturday April 20th and Sunday April 21st 10-4 each day
For two days during the Earth Day Weekend we will be cleaning up the Fall Creek and Winberry areas. (Yes this is Easter Weekend as well. We will be hunting garbage, not plastic eggs.) Smokey the Bear may even make an appearance!
Volunteers will need to sign in and out at Clark Creek campground each day so that we can track hours, give instructions, create work groups, and make sure everyone got out of the woods alright. Saturday night will be a potluck dinner and music around the camp fire. You are welcome to attend after clean up that day regardless of whether you decide to camp or not.
What you should bring: Weather appropriate clothing and camping gear (of you plan to camp), including a change of clothes from your cleanup day wear to your evening hang out wear and in case you get wet. It is the rainy season. Even it isn't raining it will be cold at night and wet and muddy in the areas we are cleaning. WATER (can't say this enough), firewood to share, hand sanitizer, sturdy gloves, shovel, garbage grabber, buckets, rake, pitchfork, food/snacks for yourself and to share for potluck, lights for night time (we could use some in the common areas) Campstove (wiling to share? We can use one in common area for cooking Saturday Night Potluck and Sunday Morning) There is a large wood-fired griddle in the main building (another reason for firewood) which will be cleaned and seasoned for use.
Directions to campground: Approximately 15 miles northeast of Lowell, Oregon Beginning at the Lowell Junior/Senior High School at 65 South Pioneer Street, head north for 0.1 mile. Turn left at the 2nd cross street onto North Shore Drive. Travel for another 0.1 mile and turn right at the first cross street, which is South Moss Street. In approximately 0.8 miles, South Moss Street becomes the Jasper-Lowell Road. Continue for another 1.0 mile until the four-way stop. Turn right onto Big Fall Creek Road. Approaching the base of the Fall Creek Lake dam, bear to the left after passing Winberry Creek Road (on your right). Note that Big Fall Creek Road becomes Forest Road 18 after crossing the National Forest boundary. Travel for 12.7 miles and the destination will be on your left.
Saturday night, those who are interested, may choose to camp within the Clark Creek Organizational Campground. Limited availability for camping. Please contact FOFCW directly if interested.
You do NOT have to camp to come help out. There will be plenty to do each day. Make new friends and celebrate a clean forest. This is a Family Friendly event. If you are coming out to party in the woods and not help with the cleanup...this event is not for you!
We are here to gather as a community and clean up the surrounding areas. PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT. This is a Federal Campground. Illegal drugs and intoxicated behavior will not be tolerated. THERE IS NO POTABLE WATER AVAILABLE. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN. There are six open air shelters available. Tent camping will be on impacted areas only. There will be no camping in the meadow! There is limited parking in the campground and those who want to car camp need to let us know ASAP. There is also a small parking lot at the front of the campground and nearby turnouts. There are several fire rings. A main one near the kitchen shelter which also has a fireplace and others in front of the shelters. We need people to bring firewood to share. Please make sure that it is acquired locally. We do not want to bring bugs into the area and we will not be gleaning from the woods as it will be too wet. Saturday Night and a Sunday Morning meal will be potluck. We are also looking for and may be receiving donations for these meals and would love people to help with cooking.
We will have Waffles from Off the Waffle for Sunday Morning potluck! https://offthewaffle.com/
Saturday we will be having fireside music and sing along with local musicians Humble George (and possibly friends). https://www.facebook.com/HumbleGeorgeBand/
If you are bringing children, please be aware that there are hazardous materials within the cleanup areas. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. WE (Friends of Fall Creek Watershed Inc) shall not be held responsible for any incidents. You should not leave valuables in your vehicle. We will have First Aid available. You will need to participate using your best judgment and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you bring your dog, please be aware that there are dangerous things they could step on or get into. YOUR DOG MUST BE ON LEASH AND UNDER YOUR CONTROL AT ALL TIMES. IT IS TICK, SKUNK AND MOSQUITO SEASON PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
